Description

Red Belted Bracket (fomitopsis pinicola) – Elk Bay, Vancouver Island

This perennial fungus is usually found on dead conifers, deriving nutrients from the decaying wood.  Somewhat ball shaped and white when young, it gradually changes colour and shape as it ages.  The age of the fungus can be determined by counting the annual rings.
